Meramec Caverns, Stanton, Missouri

Gary and I toured Meramec Caverns. We really enjoyed our
tour. It was on a Monday, and there were only 12 in our group.
Cost of tour was $12 per person. The cave was mined for the
saltpeter, which was used in making gunpowder. During the
Civil War, a Federal powder mill in the cave was blown up
by Confederate guerrillas. Jesse James was a member of that
group. Later, in the 1870's, Jesse and his band used the cave as
a hideout. The Caverns were opened to the public in 1933.

This is part of the Stage Curtin- it is a mineral deposit
which measures 70' high, 60' wide, and 35' thick.
