Fort Columbia, Washington
We visited Fort Columbia in Washington. It was one of three batterys set up to protect the Columbia River during wars. The Battery was named after Juls G. Ord who was a 1st Lt killed in action at San Juan Hill, Cuba on July 1, 1898. The battery had 3 8" guns mounted on disappearing carriages. One could not see the battery from the River. During WWI the guns were sent to France and used on railroad cars. The 6" gun could hit a target over 15 miles away with a 105 pound armor piercing projectile. 5 rounds per minute could be fired. There are only 6 of these guns left in the US.
